A fuse board replacement — more accurately called a consumer unit replacement — involves swapping out your existing fuse box for a modern unit fitted with RCD (Residual Current Device) protection. Most Edinburgh homes built before the mid-1990s still have older boards with rewirable fuses or early MCBs that offer no RCD protection, meaning they can’t detect the kind of electrical faults that cause electric shocks or fires. Current wiring regulations (BS 7671) require all domestic consumer units to have RCD protection, and an outdated board can be flagged on a home survey, make it harder to get buildings insurance, or block sign-off when you add a new circuit.
The most common signs that your fuse board needs replacing include: old-style rewirable fuses (ceramic fuses you have to re-wire yourself), a board with no RCD protection, breakers that trip regularly without explanation, a board that’s physically damaged or discoloured, or a solicitor’s report flagging it during a property sale. If you’re adding a new circuit — an EV charger, a kitchen extension, or a home office supply — your existing board may not have the capacity or protection standard required to accommodate it safely.
At CapitalVolt, all consumer unit replacements are carried out by NICEIC-registered electricians and certified in accordance with BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations). You receive a full Electrical Installation Certificate on the day, and we handle all the paperwork. We work across Edinburgh and the Lothians and typically have same-week availability for domestic fuse board replacements.

Our process
Most jobs are completed in a single visit. Here’s exactly what to expect from first contact to certification.
Get in touch by phone or via the quote form and we’ll arrange a convenient time to visit. We assess your existing board, count your circuits, and check the incoming supply. You’ll receive a fixed written quote — usually on the same day — with no obligation to proceed.
We carry out the full replacement in a single visit. The supply is isolated for working periods only, and we keep disruption to a minimum. All circuits are tested before power is restored, so everything is confirmed working before we leave.
You receive your Electrical Installation Certificate on the day the work is completed. As an NICEIC-registered contractor, we certify the installation to BS 7671 and handle all compliance paperwork — you don’t need to do anything separately. Your certificate is valid for property sales, insurance, and EICR purposes.
