Electric shower installation in Edinburgh — is an electric shower right for your home?

When you need an electric shower installed or replaced, CapitalVolt is the team to call. We’re experienced with electric shower installation for all the popular brands and types, including Triton, Mira, Grohe, Bristan and many more. Our fully certified electricians have been operating in the local area for years and have built a reputation for getting both smaller electrical works and larger projects done right first time.

An electric shower only requires a cold water connection — the cold water is heated instantly by electricity to provide the hot water you need. That makes an electric shower the right choice for properties with a small hot water tank that can’t serve the whole household, or for anyone who wants instant hot water without relying on the boiler. If you have an old electric shower, we can replace it with a modern version that will serve you well for years to come.

We install and replace electric showers across Edinburgh, the Lothians, Corstorphine, Cramond and Fife. Every installation includes a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, correct cable sizing and full testing — so you can be confident the job is done safely and to current wiring regulations.

Everything covered in your electric shower installation

Whether it’s a new installation or a like-for-like replacement, here’s what’s included as standard.

  • Dedicated shower circuit from the consumer unitElectric showers require their own circuit — we run one from the board with the correct rated MCB.

  • Correctly sized cable & pull-cord isolatorCable is sized to match the shower’s kW rating. A ceiling pull-cord switch is fitted as required by regulations.

  • Supply & installation of your chosen shower unitWe fit all major brands — Triton, Mira, Grohe, Bristan and more — or supply a recommended unit.

  • Cold water connectionWe connect the cold water feed to the shower unit. Only a cold supply is needed — no hot water pipe required.

  • RCD protection on the shower circuitThe shower circuit is protected by an RCD at the consumer unit for maximum safety in a wet environment.

  • Full testing to BS 7671Insulation resistance, earth continuity and RCD trip tests are all carried out before handover.

  • Like-for-like replacement optionUpgrading an existing electric shower? We remove the old unit and fit the new one on the same circuit where suitable.

  • Certification where requiredNew circuits are certified to BS 7671 — we handle all compliance paperwork and issue certificates on the day.

Pricing note

Electric shower installation prices depend on whether a new circuit is needed or you’re replacing an existing unit on a suitable circuit. We provide a fixed written quote before any work begins — no surprises on the day.

How your electric shower installation works

Most installations are completed in a single visit — here’s what to expect.

1

Quote & specification check

Get in touch and let us know the shower model you’d like (or ask for a recommendation). We’ll confirm the electrical requirements, check your existing consumer unit capacity and provide a fixed-price quote.

2

Installation — typically half a day

We run the dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, install the pull-cord isolator, connect the cold water feed and mount the shower unit. Cable routes are kept as neat and concealed as possible.

3

Testing, handover & certification

Every connection is tested to BS 7671 before we hand over. We walk you through the shower controls and issue any required certificates on the day, including your Electrical Installation Certificate for new circuits.

Frequently asked questions about electric showers

Everything you need to know before booking an electric shower installation in Edinburgh.

Yes — electric showers draw a high current (typically 30–45 amps depending on the kW rating) and must have a dedicated circuit run directly from the consumer unit. This circuit includes its own MCB and RCD protection. We handle the full circuit installation as part of the job.

It depends on the existing cable size and MCB rating. A higher kW shower draws more current and may require a larger cable. We’ll check your existing circuit and let you know whether an upgrade is straightforward or whether the cable needs to be upsized — all included in our fixed quote.

Electric showers heat water on demand using only a cold supply, so you never run out of hot water — even during peak times. They’re independent of your boiler, 96% efficient at point of use, and only heat water when you’re actually showering, so there’s no energy wasted keeping a tank hot. They’re ideal for households with limited hot water storage or as a second shower.

A like-for-like replacement on an existing circuit typically takes 1–2 hours. A new installation requiring a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit usually takes half a day, depending on the cable route and accessibility. We’ll confirm the expected timeframe when we quote.

We install all major brands including Triton, Mira, Grohe, Bristan and more. If you already have a unit in mind, we’re happy to fit it. If you’d like a recommendation based on your budget and water pressure, we can advise on the best option for your property.
