Garden power & lighting in Edinburgh — make your outdoor space work harder

Adding lighting and electric sockets to your garden makes it safer and easier to use. Why not extend the amount of time you can comfortably spend outside by installing power and lighting to your patio, pathways or summer house? We’re available to fit what you need — from an outdoor socket to security lighting — across Edinburgh, the Lothians, Corstorphine, Cramond and Fife.

Outdoor lighting serves a range of functions. It provides added safety by illuminating darker areas, improves security and deters intruders by increasing visibility from the street, and can simply enhance the aesthetics of any outdoor space. Illuminate plants or trees, light a pathway, or add lighting so you can comfortably use your garden after dark — the team at CapitalVolt can install motion sensors, security lights, driveway lights, step lights, flood lights and festoon lights.

Power sockets in the garden make life easier too. Plug in garden tools like the lawn mower or jet washer without trailing cables through the house, take your laptop outside, or install a permanent supply for a hot tub, outdoor cinema or sound system. As more of us work from home, we also install power to sheds, summer houses, garages, outbuildings and cabins — turning them into fully functional home offices or workshops.

Frequently asked questions about garden power & lighting

Everything you need to know before booking an outdoor electrical installation in Edinburgh.

In most cases, yes. Outdoor electrical installations are classified as special locations under the wiring regulations and require RCD protection. We typically run a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit to ensure the outdoor supply is properly protected and doesn’t affect your indoor circuits if a fault occurs.

Yes — outdoor electrical work must comply with BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations) and be carried out by a qualified electrician. As an NICEIC-registered contractor, CapitalVolt certifies all work and handles the paperwork on your behalf at no extra cost. You’ll receive the appropriate certificate on completion.

Absolutely — we regularly install power supplies to sheds, summer houses, garages, cabins and garden offices. We run armoured cable underground from the house and install a small consumer unit in the outbuilding with sockets, lighting and capacity for heating if needed. It’s a popular option for anyone setting up a home office or workshop.

For underground runs we use steel wire armoured (SWA) cable, which is designed for direct burial and provides mechanical protection. The cable is laid at the correct depth and routed to avoid future disturbance. For surface-mounted runs along fences or walls, we use suitable outdoor-rated cable with appropriate protection.

Yes — we can install smart-compatible outdoor lighting that can be controlled via an app on your phone, set to schedules or triggered by motion sensors. Let us know what you’re looking for and we’ll recommend the best fittings and control options for your setup.
